Everything we do now uses technology — same goes for government. It just uses bad and old technology and spends too much money on it. Companies provide technology to execute policy such as business permitting apps for economic development or social services text-message systems for the safety net. Understandably, the market for government technology is massive: nearly $200B annually.
Breaking down the~$200B market opportunity
Overall Federal IT Spend seems huge: $90.9B (and it is).
But sans DOD, that Federal Spend of $53.2B is actually lower than State ($60.6B) OR Local ($58.1B).
Pulling out DOD, federal, state, and local spending are similar (~$53-60B)
So much attention goes to the feds/DC, but market opportunity is larger in State + Local Government ($118.7B) than Federal Government, and that number should only grow with post-COVID investments…
…and it’s growing
In President Biden’s 2021 stimulus plan: additional $9 Billion for technology — specifically $200M for staffing up federal technologists. (More to come.)
